Gaming on Apple Silicon

1 min read#macos-gaming#apple-silicon

If you love video games, portability, convenience, and a great OS - then gaming on a Mac is actually quite terrible. But it does work, sometimes.

What works?

There are actually alot of games available natively via Steam, some also in the Apple App Store - but that's a line I haven't been willing to cross. My favourite game so far has definitely been No Man's Sky. It runs flawlessly and really shows off how good gaming can be on a Mac. It's also sci-fi and a very in depth game to boot.

Crossover

The obvious elephant in the room is games that AREN'T natively supported on MacOS. This is where Crossover steps in. Out of the box, it is impressive. You can install Steam, Battlenet, Rockstar Launcher. And a bunch of games work without much more effort.

Just recently however with the release of GPTK4 and Metal 4 compatibility, you might find more coming soon and with some small patching you can get increased performance and increased compatibility. More on that to come.

So what does it mean?

It's good news, although the Battle between Epic and Apple has hurt some chances, Steam investing heavily in Proton/SteamDeck is not directly helpful but certainly isn't harmful. I am hopeful for the future of gaming on Mac and will continue to pursue it as a passion project. There is no horizon in sight for retiring my windows gaming PC, but I believe I can shift it into the background a bit further everyday. And thank god, because by george is MacOS a far more pleasent experience in everyway.
